First Severn Crossing

1966

The development of the stiffened box girder for the First Severn Bridge made possible savings of up to 25% in the capital cost of long span bridges.

The innovative nature of the 988m main span bridge linking England and Wales was recognised with the 1969 MacRobert Award from the Council of Engineering Institutions.

Freeman Fox also received the Queen's Award to Industry in 1967 for technological innovation in suspension bridge design.
