The bridge opening solved the problem, dating from Roman times, of the obstacle the River Humber formed to communications along England's east coast.
Opened in 1981 by HM The Queen, the 1,410 metre span suspension bridge remains one of the longest in the world.
The designers developed an innovative design requiring less steel in the bridge deck which required less material in the cables, towers, anchorages and foundations.
The result is a streamlined shape which is aesthetically pleasing and ideally suited to aerodynamic conditions of the bridge's exposed location.
The numerous awards bestowed to the project include the 1982 Civic Trust Award and a Special Award from the Institution of Structural Engineers.
